Natural Rawhide Free Dog Chews: What to Give Your Dog Instead

Rawhide has been a staple of the dog treat aisle for decades. It is cheap, widely available, and dogs love to chew it. The problem is that rawhide is one of the most heavily processed, poorly regulated products in the pet industry — and more and more dog owners are looking for a better alternative.

The good news? There are natural, rawhide-free chews that are not just safer. They are genuinely more nutritious, more digestible, and more satisfying for your dog to chew.

What Is Wrong with Rawhide?

Rawhide is made from the inner layer of animal hides — typically from cattle. On the surface, that sounds natural enough. But the process of turning rawhide into the bleached, pressed, flavored sticks and rolls you find at the pet store involves significant chemical processing.

Common steps in rawhide production include soaking in lime or ash solutions to remove hair, washing with hydrogen peroxide or bleach to achieve the pale white color consumers expect, and treating with flavoring agents or preservatives to improve palatability and shelf life. Many rawhide products are also manufactured overseas under minimal regulatory oversight.

Beyond the processing concerns, rawhide poses real physical risks. Large pieces that break off can become choking hazards or cause gastrointestinal blockages, particularly in aggressive chewers. Rawhide is not easily digestible, and swallowed pieces can swell in the stomach.

What Makes a Good Rawhide Alternative?

A great rawhide-free chew satisfies the same deep instinct to gnaw and chew, while being safer, more digestible, and made from ingredients you can actually understand. Here’s what to look for:

  • Single ingredient. The best natural chews have exactly one ingredient. You should be able to identify it immediately from the product name: beef hide, beef ear, beef trachea, hog ear, duck neck. If the ingredient list has more than one item, start asking questions.
  • Minimal processing. Natural chews should be dried or dehydrated, not chemically treated, bleached, or artificially flavored.
  • Transparent sourcing. Where did the animal come from? How was it raised? A brand that cannot answer these questions probably does not know the answers.
  • Appropriate for your dog’s chewing style. Aggressive chewers need denser chews. Puppies and senior dogs do better with softer options. The right chew for your dog depends on their size, age, and chewing intensity.

The Best Natural Rawhide-Free Chews

Beef Hide Rolls and Chips from Farm Hounds are a natural starting point. These are made from beef hide — the same raw material as rawhide — but without any of the chemical processing. The result is a chew that is denser, more digestible, and far more transparent about what it is and where it came from.

Beef Ears and Hog Ears are softer chews that work well for medium and moderate chewers. They are high in natural collagen, which supports skin, coat, and joint health. Hairy beef ears have an added benefit: the coarse hair acts as a natural dental scrub and a gentle internal dewormer.

Beef Trachea is one of the most nutritious chews available. It is naturally rich in chondroitin and glucosamine — compounds that support joint health — and has a hollow structure, making it a great option for stuffing with other treats.

Duck Necks and Chicken Feet are softer, more pliable chews suitable for smaller and senior dogs whose teeth and jaws cannot handle harder options.

A Word About Sourcing

The natural chew market has grown quickly, and not every brand entering the space has the same commitment to quality. Some brands label products as “natural” while still sourcing from industrial farms overseas with limited traceability.

At Farm Hounds, every chew we sell comes from a specific farm we personally vet. We list the farm on the packaging because we believe you should know exactly where your dog’s food comes from. Our chews contain no artificial preservatives, no added flavors, and no ingredients you cannot immediately recognize and pronounce.
